Looking for love and a five-star meal? So are many of the members of The Single Gourmet Club, which offers a bar scene alternative to those who savor the finer things in life. For over 20 years, the Single Gourmet, a national dining club with 2500 member in South Florida, has toured upscale restaurants throughtout the area. At a recent event about 100 members gathered at Capriccio Ristorante, an upscale Italian restaurant. “I like it. It’s a nice way to mingle in a non-stressed atmosphere,” said newcomer Sharon Young, a teacher by profession.
Single gourmet director Barry Adelson greets members as they trickle in for cocktails prior to dinner. Capriccio Ristorante has a warm, romantic ambience, with European fixtures which makes the members very comfortable. The gourmet diners chatted among themselves, sipping wine or a cocktail before convening in the dining room.
“This is a full time job for me,” said Adelson, who shoulders the director’s job. “I like the idea of putting people together. I have always been a good matchmaker. This is for quality people meeting quality people in nice settings.” The cost of joining is $99. a year plus the cost of the meals.
Adelson arranges everything with the restaurants prior the the clubs visits including bargaining for the best price (group rate). Besides dining, the group attends wine-tastings and goes on cruises and other trips. The Single Gourmet features dinner events every week.
Back in the dining room, Charles Stilwell, smiled warmly and chatted with others. Stilwell who has been a member for a few years, said he enjoys meeting new friends and going on dates. ” I’ve enjoyed this immensely,” he said. “I have met people I would have never had the opportunity to meet, and it’s a safe controlled setting.”
